Welcome to the 2018 IRUA Annual Members Meeting and Conference being held April 11-13, 2018 at Marriott Orlando World Center, 8701 World Center Drive, Orlando, FL 32821.

“Game Changers” is the theme of our 2018 Annual Conference and Meeting of Members.  This program brings together prominent Executives in the industry with “Leaders of the Future”.  This program will include interactive sessions and topics:  a CEO Panel, The Work Force of the Future, Flood, Cannabis and InsurTech.

In addition, this program can be submitted for review to the Institutes®CPCU – Risk and Insurance Management for CPCU credit.

For your records, a limited number of rooms have been blocked at the group rate of $219 (plus applicable taxes). J. O’Rourke, humorist and writer, was an excellent opening night speaker. An all-day session on April 3rd featured CEO & Reinsurance Buyers Roundtables. Additionally, there were 4 breakouts in each of 3 workshop tracks – Property, Casualty & Claims. The event wrapped up with a great BBQ dinner.

This year, the format had changed to allow for the Golf Tournament to be held on Tuesday, April 2 at noon with the Opening Night Cocktail Reception and dinner held immediately following the Tournament.

On April 3rd, the program ran all day starting with the 2019 Annual Meeting of Members where new officers were elected with Andrew Downing of Stonybrook Risk Management assuming the role of President for 2019 – 2021 term. Arlene Kern, of Munich Reinsurance America moved to Immediate Past President after serving her two -year term. Laura Herubin, of MAPFRE Re continues to serve as Secretary and Bill Bernens of Arch Re as Treasurer.  Following the days sessions, a casual networking reception and dinner was held for all attendees.

Navigating the Future with 20/20 Vision

Join us at the IRUA’s Annual Members Meeting & Conference where professionals in reinsurance will gather to discuss the current issues facing the industry in our headline panel: “The Reinsurance Leaders’ Vision of the Future.”   We will also be hosting a mix of brokers and reinsurance buyers to discuss challenges and expectations from both sides of a reinsurance transaction on our “Reinsurance Market Panel”.

In addition to IRUA’s General Session, the conference will have separate interactive workshop tracks available for Property and Casualty.  Attendees will have the opportunity to pick from a selection of topics including: Intellectual Property Insurance, Large Property Losses, Property Marine/Energy, 2019 Catastrophes, Workers Compensation Trends, Moss Torts, Child Victim Liability, Management/Transactional Liability, among others.

The program will open with our traditional Annual Golf Outing on Monday, April 12th followed by the opening night reception with a keynote speaker.  The educational sessions will be a full-day on Tuesday, April 13th and the program will conclude with a casual networking “Fun in the Sun” reception and dinner.

Paul White is a partner in the firm’s Los Angeles, California office and focuses his practice on complex insurance coverage and bad faith litigation and represents defendants in commercial litigation. His insurance coverage practice includes advising and representing insurers in bad faith litigation and insurance policy disputes, including first-party property policies, general liability coverage, errors and omissions insurance, and media liability insurance. He also advises and represents insurers in subrogation actions on property losses. In addition, he has litigated and arbitrated disputes throughout the United States involving domestic and foreign insurance agents and brokers in all lines of coverage. He has broad experience in the business practices of all types of insurance intermediaries, including brokers at every level in the broking process, from producers to managing general agents to London Market brokers.

In his litigation practice, Paul focuses on commercial business litigation, including professional liability actions brought against insurance agents and brokers. U.S. Insurance and Reinsurance accounting is unique to the industry. We have as our presenters, two highly experienced Arch Re officers, based in Morristown, N.J., who will explain in detail the mechanics of insurance/reinsurance accounting including how and why Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP) varies from Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). See the differences between facultative and treaty accounting and how proportional and non-proportional business is accounted for.

Shaya Altschuller, CPA, has been Corporate Controller at Arch Reinsurance Company since 2014, previously serving as assistant controller since 2008. Mr. Altschuller is responsible for the financial reporting of GAAP and Statutory financial statements and manages Arch Reinsurance Company’s corporate reporting department. He has 21 years of industry experience, including serving as Assistant Vice President for three years at Arch Insurance. He has also served as an auditor specializing in insurance clients at both Deloitte & Touche and Ernst & Young from 2000-2005.

Mr. Altschuller received a B.S. in accounting from Yeshiva University and is affiliated to with the American Institute of CPAs and the New York State Society of CPAs.

Jeffrey Pantaliano

Jeffrey Pantaliano has been in the insurance industry since 2006. He has been with Arch Reinsurance Company since 2012, primarily working with the Facultative division. He was previously a reinsurance accounting manager and has served as assistant controller since 2020. Prior to joining Arch, Mr. Pantaliano worked for Everest National Insurance Company as a billing and collection specialist.

He is a 2004 graduate from Roger Williams University.
