PROPORTIONAL & NON-PROPORTIONAL WORKSHOPS (FINALLY) WERE ALL HELD SUCCESSFULLY

The first 10 weeks of 2015 were not kind to our educational schedule and we had to postpone the late January event into early February and early March. In the end almost all our registrants were able to attend and the Advanced workshop squeaked by with, once again, snow threatening New York City. Thanks are due to our law firm hosts – KATTEN MUCHIN ROSENMAN and then SCHIFF HARDIN – for their flexibility and kind hospitality not to mention the perseverance of our registrants and instructor, John Chaplin, who once again received very favorable reviews.

IRU has taken over the administration and marketing of the meetings and brought online registration and payment convenience to the Group.

SPRING CONFERENCE CONCLUDES ON A HIGH NOTE

Two excellent days of presentations sandwiched between the golf tournament received very favorable reviews both as to content and location.

On day 1 of the conference attendees were treated to excellent presentations from Mary Seidel of the RAA with an update on TRIA; Chris Nowinski, of the Sports Legacy Institute, on concussion issues andthe work that his Institute is doing to promote knowledge and changes to safeguard today’s children and current and future contact sports players from the risks associated with multiple concussions. A truly inspiring and excellent presentation. The last presentation of the morning was the Reinsurance Buyers Forum where senior executives of AIG, Main Street America and IAT Group gave their views of the current marketplace and forecast for the near-term with particular reference to the growing capacity from non-traditional markets.

The Golf Tournament was enjoyed by many despite dull (but dry) weather and Julie Hassan of Markel Global Re won many of the prizes so we expect to see her back next year- well done, Julie!!.

Day 2 featured the Regional Reinsurance Market Panel discussion led by Jay Woods of Guy Carpenter and with speakers from Munich Re America; American Ag; Platinum Re; and Allied World Re.  Dr. Bob Hartwig of the I.I.I. then gave his ever-interesting and thought provoking presentation on the Insurance and Reinsurance Cycle – Overview and Outlook. So the 47th Annual Spring Conference concluded and initial feedback indicated great satisfaction from participants as to the program and venue.

Now on to 2015 and the Board is already considering dates and venues. The Conference will likely be held just prior to the AAIS meeting and themes are being discussed.

IRUA ADOPTS SEVERAL BYLAW AMENDMENTS AND ELECTS OFFICERS AND DIRECTORS

At the Annual Meeting of Members held on April 7, several bylaw amendments were adopted including expanding membership eligibility to include providers of services to the reinsurance community, such as attorneys, accountants and consultants. This move reflects the importance of providers to the community and will increase involvement by such parties in IRU’s educational programs.

Another amendment bifurcated the Secretary/Treasurer role, and the election of officers and directors resulted in Jim Brost of Holborn continuing as President; Mike Sowa of Aspen Re became Vice President, Kevin Rentko of Platinum Re was elected Secretary and Arlene Kern of Munich Re America was elected Treasurer. Several existing directors terms were extended by a further 2 years and Paul McKeon, Chief Underwriting Officer of Transatlantic Re joined the board.
